University of Chile teaches an Academic Reading and Writing course applying the ESE:O methodology
This year the University of Chile decided to teach a cross-curricular course in Academic Reading
and Writing that brings together more than 400 students from the Undergraduate School.
The cross-curricular course, called "Reading, Writing and Speaking in the Social Sciences" is
intended for first-year students in psychology, anthropology, sociology, and social work and is
given during their first semester. Using the ESE:O methodology, the course trains students in
academic writing, so that they can write texts that meet formal social science requirements.
This course was developed initially as a semi face-to-face (b-learning) academic reading and
writing workshop, including both face-to-face classes and online work, but given the worldwide
COVID-19 contingency it turned into a 100% online modality course. Thanks to ESE:O’s previous
distance learning experience, the adaptation presented no problems.
Soledad Falabella, director of the NGO ESE:O teaches the course personally, with the assistance of
former ESE:O student Jaime Nahum.
A basic methodological principle of the course is that reading, and writing, go hand in hand with
critical thinking. In fact, reading and writing are acts of thought, and without the latter they would
simply be impossible. By reading and exercising critical thinking, this methodology builds
metacognition through the community experience of peer-to-peer editing and teamwork.
Students have reacted positively to the course´s development, with notable improvement in their
reading and writing.
