From 12 to 19 March, Soledad Falabella, Sebastian Brett and Malcolm Coad taught at the first 2020 Joint Advanced Seminar (JAS) held for Cohort 10 fellows of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA). The month-long training seminar took place at the University of Makerere in Kampala, Uganda, but due to COVID-19 travel issues ESE:O held its scientific writing workshop online. The workshop was a great success, thanks to the assistance in classroom of our Ugandan colleagues Charles Kato and John Isunju, and to the active participation of Prof. Susan Bondy of the University of Toronto. In the end, the teaching was done in real time in three time zones, and it worked!

Despite our physical absence, we were able to show videos and Powerpoints, listen to music, debate how to explore and write up a research gap, and review fellows’ texts online in small groups. The Makerere workshop set the stage for our ongoing online activities with Cohort 10, which will conclude in November 2010.
